Dropper Basics

Many provinces, states and other jurisdictions around the world allow fly fishers to use more than one fly on a dropper system.  Droppers provide the fly fisher with a number of benefits including quickly determining the pattern of choice, using attractor style patterns to draw fish to a more imitative offering and determining feeding depth.

Alberta regulations allow the use of up to 3 patterns at a time I tend to settle in most instances for two.   The two dropper system is simple to employ.  Begin by knotting on the top fly using your favorite knot, mine is the Non-Slip loop knot.  Take a suitable length of tippet material-I often begin with 24 inches-and using an Improved Clinch knot the tippet material to the bend of the hook.  With the tippet length in place once again use your favorite knot to tie in the point pattern.  The tippet length does not interfere with the hooking ability of the lead fly and a dropper system put together in this manner results in a minimum of tangles.  A problem more prevalent with other dropper systems such as those off of a Blood or Surgeon’s knot set up.
